Our voice is a sponge for our emotions/La voz es una esponja de nuestras emociones (en español abajo)

Conference Interpreter

Conference interpreting is usually performed sitting down, so while it can certainly be mentally exhausting, we don’t often think of it as a physically demanding profession. However, when it comes to the voice – one of our main working tools - interpreters need to be fit enough to run a marathon, while sounding calm and collected from start to finish.

As communication professionals, interpreters need to maintain their voice in excellent working condition throughout their career, and to control its sensitive mechanisms to avoid unwittingly conveying any personal emotions or tension.

This month, AIB has been talking to Helena Cabo, a singer, vocal coach, and lover of oral communication as it interweaves the more technical and physiological aspects of the voice with the emotional web of what we are and what we want to say.

Q. How important is it to train and exercise the voice?
A. Can you imagine a pianist who isn’t familiar with the shape or workings of her piano? A climber who doesn’t look after his ropes? An actor who doesn’t think about her characters’ emotions? A child who just wants to play and never sleep?

Our voice very often reminds us that it is good to train, know, look after, feel emotion and rest it wisely.

Q. What does your job involve?
A. My work is about helping people to be more familiar with their voice, to get more out of it, know how to take care of it, and cope with their everyday situations. The techniques I teach remind the body what it already knows, and they’re simple and efficient. As is often the way in life, it’s not about doing more, but rather doing just enough to get optimum results.

Q. How does the voice work?
A. The voice is a beautiful instrument – highly sensitive and powerful at the same time. The physiological mechanism of the larynx is extremely complex, even more than the heart. It’s fascinating to feel how each of the sounds we make is a balancing act between ligaments, cartilage, muscles, air… Being aware of those movements allows us to use our voice with enhanced control and precision. It’s an experience that requires training and calm, but knowing what we’re doing gives us greater peace of mind.

Q. Like all human beings, interpreters endure tiredness, tension, nerves and other emotions that they must not convey to their listeners. How can we make sure our voice doesn’t sell us out?
Our voice is a sponge for our emotions. This makes the human species unique, but at times it really doesn’t work in our favour. In stressful situations, the body tends to protect itself by closing up. However, that closure has a direct impact on the larynx and therefore on how our voice works. There are some very effective tricks to learn how to get around that – you’ll have to come and see me to find out what they are.

Q. Should we do anything in particular to look after our voice?
A. Be happy! Dance! Laugh a lot! Sing! Have siestas and sleep with gay abandon! It might seem silly, but it’s actually really effective. Our voices are inextricably linked to our feelings, as well as to how we move, what we eat, how we sleep, and what our outlook on life is.
If we look after our life, we’re looking after our voice. But we can also learn to know our voice better. Know and feel its boundaries. Be aware of what we’re doing and what we’re not doing when we speak. Last but not least, find and practice techniques that help to give us the voice we need and want.

Q. What are the features of a pleasant sounding voice?
A. Tricky question! It depends on where you live, the context, the space, what you’re doing… Every culture has its sounds; every city, town, family and person perceives them in her own way. For me, pleasant sounding voices are my daughters telling me a story.

¡Bailar! ¡Reír mucho! ¡Cantar! ¡Hacer siestas y dormir a gusto!
